Materials Needed

  1. Tyvek Sheets or rolls: Ideal Tyvek for making windsock decoys is Dupont Tyvek 14xx series. It’s soft, fabric-like, drapeable and print-worthy. You can purchase Tyvek by the roll or in large sheets.
  2. Scissors or Utility Knife: For cutting the Tyvek into desired shapes.
  3. Sewing Machine: For assembling sewing the Tyvek panels together
  4. Strapping Tape: For forming a perfect circular collar tape. Suggested width is 12mm or wider.
  5. Black Matte Grommets: For fiberglass stakes to go through when assembling.
  6. Stencil or Templates: For painting your own patterns.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Create a Template

  • Draw or print a template for the windsock decoy body bag. The front and back panels are the same. It’s suggested that you punch three or four water draining holes on the back panel.

2. Cut the Tyvek

  • Lay the Tyvek flat and trace the body template onto it using a permanent marker.
  • Cut out the shapes carefully using scissors or a utility knife.
  • Create 3 holes on the back panel using a hole punch. Ideal hole diameter is 1/3’’ or bigger.

4. Sew the Windsock

  • Sew the two cut panels together using your sewing machine.
  • Make sure that the sleek and flat side is sewn on the inside so it won’t look shiny on the outside.
  • Cut the strapping tape into an ideal length, sew the two ends together to form a circle. Then sew the circle into the opening of the windsock body, fold the Tyvek by 15mm if you are using a 12mm strapping tape so that it conceals the tape.

5. Attach the grommets

  • Punch two holes on the sewn collar tape. One centered on the front and the other on the back.
  • Attach two grommets using a manual grommet press.

6. Paint your windsock decoy patterns

  • You can paint your windsock decoy with the help of a stencil and a Aerosol Spray Paint. Snow Goose Decoys are easiest to paint.
  • After painting, dry them indoor for an hour or 30 minutes outside under sun.

Now the windsock decoy body bag is completed. You can use your own stake and backbones to deploy them in the field or you can buy them from us.
