How to Make Your Own Windsock Decoys

This guide will walk you through the steps on how to make your own windsock decoys.

Materials Needed

  • Tyvek Sheets or Rolls: Best choice is DuPont Tyvek 14xx series — soft, fabric-like, drapeable, and print-friendly. Available in rolls or large sheets.
  • Scissors or Utility Knife: For cutting Tyvek to shape.
  • Sewing Machine: To stitch the Tyvek panels together.
  • Strapping Tape: Forms the collar; recommended width is 12 mm or wider.
  • Black Matte Grommets: For securing fiberglass stakes during assembly.
  • Stencil or Templates: For painting patterns onto finished decoys.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Create a Template

  • Draw or print the body bag template.
  • Both front and back panels are identical.
  • Punch 3–4 drainage holes into the back panel for water release.

2. Cut the Tyvek

  • Lay Tyvek flat and trace the template with a permanent marker.
  • Cut carefully with scissors or a utility knife.
  • Use a hole punch to make drainage holes (ideal diameter: ⅓″ or larger).

3. Sew the Windsock

  • Stitch the two panels together on a sewing machine.
  • Ensure the sleek/flat side faces inward so the outside won’t look shiny.
  • Cut strapping tape to length, stitch its ends together to form a circle, and sew it into the body’s opening.
  • If using 12 mm tape, fold 15 mm of Tyvek over it to conceal the tape neatly.

4. Attach the Grommets

  • Punch two holes into the collar (one at the front, one at the back).
  • Secure grommets with a manual grommet press.

5. Paint Your Decoy

  • Place stencil over the windsock and apply aerosol spray paint.
  • Snow Goose decoys are the easiest to start with.
  • Allow to dry: 30 minutes in the sun or 1 hour indoors.

Finished Product

Your windsock decoy body bag is now complete. Use your own stakes and backbones for deployment, or purchase ready-made accessories.
